I was fortunate enough to talk Nikon into letting me keep their prize prototype D300 digital camera for a few more days. That enabled me to take it on another wedding on Sat. 11/10.

Kathryn Quinlan and Robbie Poet were clients of my good friend Eric Weeks of E Z Memories Photography.

I worked with Eric as his 2nd photographer and had much more freedom than I had on the last wedding, where there were already two photographers and I was mainly trying to keep out of their way. Read the rest of this entry »

Nikon was kind enough to send me a prototype of one of their two newest professional digital cameras. Soon to be released as production models, the D300 will join the D3 as Nikon’s latest editions of professional cameras. A full review can be read at this address:

I was fortunate to receive it in an overnight package a few hours before I had arranged to work with friend and fellow photographer Eric Weeks in Ocean City, NJ. I had about an hour (and no accompanying manual!) to review and set up the camera to my preferences.

Since I’ve been working with it’s predecessor, the D200 for over a year, the setup, though different with many new features, wasn’t difficult. Not wanting to interfere with Eric and his assistant, Jason, I worked around the fringes of their photography session with the bride and groom and was able to test some of the new features. One being the ability to capture nearly noiseless (referring to digital noise, or a grainy look) file in much lower lighting conditions than with any of the previous Nikon Digital SLR cameras. They most certainly got it right. All but the obvious outdoor image were taken indoors in natural light and there wasn’t a lot of it. The indoor ISO settings for the accompanying photos were from 800 to 3200. Nikon has agreed to let me keep it through this weekend and I plan to use it again at another wedding as well as every other photo session that I do this week.

No, that’s not Eric or Jason at the bottom of the stairs! However, I think he makes the image more interesting.

On Monday, November 5th, I was the guest speaker at the South Jersey chapter of the Professional Photographers Of New Jersey and was able to show the above and other images made from the D300. The photographers in attendence were very happy with what they saw in my images. Especially since a few have already ordered the D300 and are now more anxious than ever to receive one. Others told me at the end of the program that they will be putting their orders in shortly. I don’t think anyone who uses this camera with have any disappointments with it.
